I think animals keep us grounded in what it is that is really important in life. I remember preparing myself to bring home our yellow lab puppy and repeating the phrase, " I will just need to remember I love this dog more than I love my couch. It's just a couch." Now of coarse my couch (nor my carpet) is in good shape, but I do love my dog and she always loves me back.
